QuickBooks Error 1904 happens because of a damaged file or due to inappropriate file location. In addition, the error 1904 QuickBooks takes place during the installation of QuickBooks software. This all happens because the necessary components do not synchronize while upgrading the operating system of the PC.

Error 1904 QuickBooks appears with the message that [file path/name/extension] has failed to register. The message also tells the user that there is no need to worry as his or her accounting data and company files are not damaged.

Why does QuickBooks Error 1904 Occur?

Many reasons can cause QB to show Error 1904 message. Some of them are given below –

  • Damaged Microsoft component.
  • A new Windows OS has been installed on the computer.
  • QB installer file is not working or is damaged.
  • The error can also occur when a user upgrades QuickBooks version.
  • Security software is not allowing installation of QuickBooks.
  • The user is lacking the permissions required for the installation of QB on Windows.

  • User is unable to install QuickBooks.
  • QuickBooks Error 1904 pops up on the screen.
  • Windows hangs or crashes frequently.

Solutions to Fix QuickBooks Error 1904

Listed below are the effective solution that will surely assist you in getting rid of the error 1904 QuickBooks:

Solution 1 - Use QB Install Diagnostic tool

  • In the error message window, choose Ignore and then proceed to finish installing QB.
  • Now, you must not open QB but should restart your PC.
  • Download QB Install Diagnostic Tool and run it.
  • Again, reboot your PC.
  • Finally, open QuickBooks and see if you can work.

Solution 2 - Troubleshoot Windows Components

If in case, Error 1904 was not fixed by using the QB Install Diagnostic Tool, you have to carry out the repair of specific Windows components. Take into your consideration that, you should troubleshoot Windows components only in case if you are an expert Windows user or an IT expert.

To troubleshoot Windows components, you have to -

  • Repair MS .NET Framework or reinstall it.
  • Repair MSXML

After troubleshooting Windows components, see if you can install QB and open it.

Solution 3 - Make Changes to Windows Account Settings

  • Firstly, you have to switch to the Windows Administrator account.
  • Go to File Explorer.
  • Now, navigate to Common Files under Program Files in the C drive.
  • Do a right-click on Common Files.
  • From the list that appears, choose Properties.
  • Choose Edit in Security tab.
  • Go to the section with the name - Group or user names – and choose Users.
  • Now, look for the section with the name - Permissions for Users – and turn on the necessary permissions - Modify, Read and Execute, List folder contents, Read, Write.
  • Click the Apply button and then OK button.
  • Install QuickBooks. After installation, sign out of admin account through Start menu.
  • After that log in to your usual user account.
  • Click on Start in the bottom left of the screen.
  • Type the words – CMD - into the search field. Run CMD as administrator.
  • In the CMD window, type “net user administrator /active: no” and hit Enter. Your admin account becomes hidden.

If QuickBooks can be opened with your usual/regular account, it means QuickBooks Error 1904 has got fixed.

Solution 4 - Add QB to Bitdefender exclusion list

If in case, you are using Bitdefender, then you cannot resolve this error by just disabling it. What you need to do is to add QB to the exclusion list of the Bitdefender.

  • If in case, you are using a 32-bit Windows OS, then you have to put C:\Program Files\Common Files in the exclusion list.
  • If in case, you are using a 64-bit Windows OS, then you have to put C:\Program Files\Intuit (C:\Program Files(x86)\Intuit) in the exclusion list.

Solution 5 - Uninstall and Reinstall Adobe Flash Player

If in case, QuickBooks Error 1904 appears on the screen during the installation of Adobe Flash Player, then follow these steps -

  • Download QB Install Diagnostic Tool and run it.
  • Click on the Start menu.
  • Type the words - Control Panel – in the search field.
  • Click on Control Panel to open it.
  • Now, go to Uninstall a program.
  • In the list of programs, look for Adobe Flash Player ActiveX.
  • You have to choose Uninstall.
  • Follow the instructions and let the uninstallation get completed.
  • Download Adobe Flash Player and reinstall it.

By applying the above solutions, you should be able to fix QuickBooks Error Code 1904.
